Five Smooth Stones

Have you ever been living a confusing or frightening life? Well in the book Five Smooth Stones by Kristiana Gregory there is a nine year old girl that is living a confusing and frightening life. In the book there is a girl named Hope and the book is like Hope’s diary. Her diary describes the events that lead up the Declaration of Independence. People in this important part of history include George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. Hope’s family has spread out meaning her dad has left on a secret mission and her brother Ethan has gone out to search for him. It seems like the family is falling apart because of the Tories and Patriots. Hope thinks that her dad has either been killed or he has become a Tory which is actually worse. Hope does not only write in her diary about the Declaration of Independence but she ends her diary hoping her dad and her brother Ethan with return home soon.
To begin with, Hope’s family has been falling apart in many ways. She thinks the reason that her family is falling apart is because of the Revolutionary war which she thinks is tearing her family apart. Her dad has been gone for a while and now Ethan has too because he is looking for his dad. So since her dad and brother are gone it is left with just Hope and her mom but Hope does have her best friend Polly who she can share her family problems with. Hope's mom is actually expecting a new baby soon but they find that Hope and her mother may have to leave her home as the British get closer.
Next, Hope's family is getting spread apart because of the Revolutionary War so do you think that her family will be reunited meaning meet again or will the Revolutionary War keep them apart? The American Revolutionary War began as a war between the Kingdom of Great Britain and 13 British colonies in North America.
In conclusion, Hope and her mom did end up having to leave their cherished home but before they had to leave they received a letter that cleared up the confusion. Her father died, and one teacher in a book review said, “This is a touching story that will really make you love and appreciate your family each and every day they are alive.” Hope appreciated everyday that her dad was alive and she will miss him very much.
